PDAParts.com - Palm V Repair Guide

Palm V/Vx Repair Guide

Step 1 - Palm V/Vx and flip it over so the screen is down.

Background Info: As you know by now the Palm V/Vx does not have screws to hold it together. The case is 3 parts. There is a front shell, back shell and middle frame. All three parts are held together with a glue. The only way to separate the case is to heat up that glue. Place the palm on a surface that will not melt/burn. A piece of wood is a good surface. Using a hair dryer you will need to heat up the side of the case evenly all the way around the unit.

Step 2 - The only way to separate the case is to heat up that glue. Place the palm on a surface that will not melt/burn. A piece of wood is a good surface. Using a hair dryer you will need to heat up the side of the case evenly all the way around the unit.

READ THIS: If you run the hair dryer over the front of the screen it will melt or distort the screen surface so leave the palm face down.
Keep slowly moving the hair dryer around the case evenly. This needs to be done for 30 Second to 1 minute per side since all hair dryers are different.

Step 3 - Keep slowly moving the hair dryer around the case evenly. This needs to be done for 30 Second to 1 minute since all hair dryers are different.
Step 4 - Now that it is HOT! (DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERS) use something to separate the back shell from the frame.

It should lift off easily. There is nothing that attaches to the shell.

Step 5 - Here is the unit with the back shell off. In order to get to the front shell off you need to quickly turn it over and remove the front shell while it is still hot.
Step 6 - While the case is still hot lift off the front shell. DO NOT RUN THE HAIR DRYER ACCROSS THE FRONT OF THE SCREEN IT WILL MELT IT!

Lift off the front shell.

Step 7 - This is just a picture showing you what it looks like with all three parts separated.  You might want to remove the battery depending on what part you are replacing. If you are replacing the screen, motherboard do this. If you are replacing the buttons you do not need to remove this.
Step 8 - The battery connection pulls out from the connector.
Step 9 - To get the motherboard and screen out you will need to flip up this connector that is holding 1 of 2 connectors from the screen. Once you flip it up the ribbon cable comes out easily.
Step 10 - To get the motherboard and screen out you will need to flip up this connector also. This is 2 of 2 connectors from the screen. Once you flip it up the ribbon cable comes out easily.
Step 11 - If you are only removing the screen then the two ribbons we showed will allow you to remove it now. Go on in the directions to complete the screen removal.
Step 12 - If you need to get the motherboard out there is one more connector and ribbon to remove. Once all 3 ribbons are removed take out the screen then the mother board lifts upward and out.
Step 13 - Flip the palm over so the screen is facing you. You can now remove the screen from the unit. To put a new screen go in reverse of the directions but, please refer to the last two pictures below regarding sealing the case back up. Here is the unit with the screen out and the motherboard still in place and the battery still stuck to the back of the screen.

To get the battery off the back of the screen you can use the same heat from the hair dryer to loosen the glue on the battery.

Step 14 - After you have followed all the direction putting the unit back together you will need to clamp the unit shut so you can reheat the glue to get the case to seal back up.  Use the hair dryer on the unit while it is clamped to get the glue to melt again and seal the unit back up. That is it you are done!
